    Scripture:  Acts 2:1-21

    Happy Birthday Church

You have been called the bride of Christ by none other than our groom, Jesus who paid the bride price for you.  He did that with His own sin-paying, death-defeating crucifixion on the cross and His resurrection from the dead.  Then He went away to prepare a place for His bride.  He made a promise, though, to still be with you and me.  He made that promise long before He went to the cross.

    From John 7:37-39

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

On the day of Pentecost, a Jewish festival that occurred 50 days after Passover, we became the church.  A small group gathered.  Waiting.  Anticipating. Not really knowing what was next.  But faithful to the Lord’s command to wait.

Then…. a sound like a rushing wind.  God’s own Spirit filling that place, filling them, preparing them, equipping them.  Given gifts of language in order to be able to speak the Gospel to the world, they went out to meet the world.

Because the world had gathered.  Jews from all over the world.  From all points of the compass surrounding Jerusalem they had no idea of what was coming next.  They would be filled with faith and prepared to go.  Having heard the Gospel….in their own languages….they would go to their own languages.  As Peter declared, what the prophet Joel had spoken so long ago was happening at that moment.  “Everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord will be Saved.”  The BIG REVEAL: That name is Jesus of Nazareth.

    We are the Church

Descended from those first Christians who:

Heard that they had crucified Jesus

And our sins caused the same.

Heard that the answer for this killing was repentance

As it is answer for our sins.

Heard that the result of this faith and repentance is forgiveness

And so it is for us.

    Happy Birthday Church

    We are the Church Dispersed

Some hearing it in their own homes

Some in our gathering place our building at 505 S. Kirkwood

Each hearing the Good News in their place.

The Good News that whoever calls on the Name of the Lord Will Be saved!

    That Name is Jesus!

    We are the Church.

    We got disrupted.

But we are not the Church Defeated.

Covid 19 is a Big Church Deal

Covid 19 is a Big Church Disrupter

But Covid 19 is not a Church Destroyer

    Happy Birthday Church

From that first gathering of disciples who encountered God’s Holy Spirit on that first Pentecost to today as God’s Spirit continues to be with us the church grows on.  Dispersed but never defeated we have seen God do remarkable things in these Covid-19 days including our digital ability to worship.  As we step slowly back into in-person worship we do so with a new, strong and vibrant presence as well.  That’s only a part of What’s Next.  We will, in the way of our disciples, increase the number of those who call on the name of the Lord.  His Name is Jesus.

    Happy Birthday indeed, Church!
