“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
One effect of sin is the way it closes our eyes to generosity. Jesus knew that. He spoke of treasure and heart. He was the heart and treasure of God. God generously gave His Son up for us.
Generosity comes with growth in the heart which is where our treasure, Christ, dwells by His Holy Spirit. One Christmas Eve, after the Children’s Christmas Eve service, when we arrived at my grandparents house for dinner and gifts, we got the most generous surprise. Tied to a tree in their yard, very near the driveway, was a pony. My brothers and I got a pony for Christmas. It was from my bachelor uncles. I had won a pony earlier that summer but it got shot during hunting season. Out of their generous hearts my uncles undertook to replace that pony. I was excited beyond words. I was grateful. But it took me a long time to understand the kind of generosity that was involved in the giving of that gift.
As a child of God, I am growing in what it means to have such a generous God AND I am growing in what it means to be generous in the way that God wants me to be. I pray that you, too, grow in generosity of heart.
Gracious and Generous God, give me a heart like yours. Create in me a generous heart O Lord and renew a right Spirit within me.
In the treasured name of Jesus, Amen.
